Under the ownership of Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough United Football Club are enjoying the best spell in their 77-year history. Three promotions in four years has seen the Posh one step away from the Premier League and the owner-chairman has played a major part in that success.
The appointment of Darren Ferguson, a man with no previous managerial experience, proved to be a masterstroke with back to back promotions taking the club from League Two into the Championship and with the club leaking goals and inconsistent with their performances. It was Darragh who decided bringing back Ferguson to the club and he made an instant impact, leading Posh to promotion via the play-offs at Old Trafford with a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.
Over the years, the football club have enjoyed cup success as well developing young players through the club’s youth policy. Simon Davies, Matthew Etherington and Adam Drury all came through the ranks at London Road before making their name in the Premier League, while famous names like David Seaman and Jimmy Bullard both played for Posh.
The Club, which was formed in 1934, are nicknamed the Posh because manager Pat Tirrel, who was in charge back in the 1930s,said he was looking for ‘Posh players for a Posh team’. The nickname stuck despite a high profile challenge from Victoria Beckham to its sole use.

The home of Peterborough United, London Road, is set for redevelopment over the next few seasons with the Moy’s End set to replaced by a modern all-seated stand during the 2011-2012 campaign. The work will reduce the current capacity of over 15,300, but when the work on the stadium is complete, a capacity close to 20,000 will be available.
It is not just on the pitch that the club have enjoyed success, off the pitch the Football in the Community department work tirelessly in schools delivering qualified coaching and working on projects such as Social Inclusion and Show Racism the Red Card.
The work off the pitch has led to the club training at the new Nene Park Academy, which not only provides a base for the first team to train, but also players from the club’s successful Centre of Excellence will be educated and coached at the school.
